Mark These Times They Disappear With Cruel Swiftness

Death of an Artist

This is a painted version of collage. These images were pooled from photographs. The image of an old movie theatre is meant to represent the story of our lives. There is the young kid flying off the swing with the background of a school or institution representing the joys of youth and how our schools loom large forming us. The figure hanging off the lamp post is our teenage and early twenties as we try to hold onto youth and become someone, and then the older images. The man with the bandaged hand signaling for a taxi (or for help) and the older woman. The image of garbage at the center is many things. The garbage we create and carry, the excess and life of consuming, and work/challenges/building of a life that creates scars. I hate describing this because I actually love this image. The colours, the rhythm, and the composition are not negative to me. The reason I hate describing it is, as an artist, I have never wanted to influence the viewer. An image can say many things to many people. Me tainting the story can remove this from being an image you would like to live with. There is a jovial and strange atmosphere to this piece. I really connect with it in a positive way.
