God Forbid You Use Tools That Saddle You With Premature Sheen

Death of an Artist

This series has several pieces of collage taken from a book on graffiti artists. This piece was inspired by those artists. This is an homage to graffiti done in the abstract style. Some of the paper within the collage elements were allowed to curl (against all rules... like painting on walls). The colour and flow were part of the design, and this piece was a nightmare. Creating graffiti using materials that are difficult to control and using a style that is not conducive to literal representation was a challenge. 3 weeks and hundreds of dollars of material later, and after at least two different failed attempts that were catastrophic, the image finally emerged. This piece is a reflection of the artist's view on using digital tools. Sometimes an artist has to fight with an image, and sometimes an artist has to fail. Brian Eno talks about premature sheen of AI and using digital tools that allow the artist or designer to achieve quick outcomes that let the artist believe a piece of work is complete, when in reality the digital tool just created a "premature sheen".
